The Mind --> Muscle --> Metabolism Connection

Brain Types, Your Mind, & Your Metabolism... :-)

The mind -- and how it affects your health -- is a fascinating conversation.  For starters, where is your mind located?

Most people would say your brain... yet, we now know that memory is also stored in body tissues.  In fact, when people get myofascial release, they often have emotional releases take place with vivid memories at the same time.

Perhaps the most accurate assessment is that we don't know where the mind is located, and it's possible that your "mind" is integrated into your entire body, every tissue, every organ, every cell... 

With this in mind, when you learn how your "brain" works by learning about your "Brain Type", you are in some ways learning about how to affect your mind; and when you can affect your mind, you can affect your body as well as your metabolism.  

So, let's go over Brain Types and how knowing yours can help you grow muscle (relative to fat) and thereby increase your metabolism:

  • Explorers:  get outside, focus on fun, and make improving your health dynamic (rather than a routine that you follow every single day).  Focus on the wins and chalk up the losses to trial and error.  For example, if a certain way of eating isn't working for you and you're not having fun, ditch it.  The same is true with exercise.  Once you eliminate the boredom, you will be able to better focus and flourish.  

  • Alchemists:  take over your mind and create a new way to get healthy, lose weight, or build muscle.  For example, you might visualize an electrical signal originating in your brain, finding its way to your muscle(s) and then stimulating a muscle contraction.  Through this visualization process, you are creating new pathways and strengthening the input of your premotor area of your brain, or the area that plans movement.  This can increase your contractile strength by up to 30%, therefore increasing the effect of every rep, of every exercise you do... 

  • Oracles:  Minimum Effective Dose (MED).  Your mind seeks simplicity through disruptive innovation.  By feeling like you're "cheating" (i.e. taking a shortcut) with exercise or eating, you will find yourself way more motivated and likely to succeed.  And you'll be more present with each workout, meal, and health choice that you make.  

  • Architects:  Plan it all out ahead of time.  By thinking through your health routine for the day/week/month, and even up to 6 weeks, you are pre-stimulating an electrical current and the movements you'll be doing later get rehearsed in advance by your nervous system.  As you stimulate more muscle contraction, you affect your muscle:fat (muscle to fat ratio), which affects your metabolism...

As you can see, each Brain Type has a slightly different method of finding inspiration, removing distraction, and ultimately leading towards a higher metabolism.  Your mind runs throughout your body.  So, when your mind is clear and you think through a movement, for example, you will stimulate more muscle.  And the more muscle you stimulate, the faster you'll raise your metabolism.
